Spiro Public
Schools -Our public school system, the envy of many
large city systems, is located on a 20-acre campus at the west
edge of town. The school presently has a total student capacity
of 1800 with a present enrollment of 1450.
The extra-curricular activities
program includes a winning football team, a championship baseball
team, an excellent basketball team for both girls and boys, and
a fine track program. An exceptional band program, as well as
a strong FFA program are offered.
A parochial school with grades
K through 12 is also located in Spiro.
Higher education includes a Vocational-Technical
School, designed for open-ended training in office and shop skills.
It is designed to be converted to provided training in a variety
of fields. The Vo-Tech has 35 authorized JTPA slots, with presently
20 allocated in-office training and 15 allocated inwelding. The
facility is certified and operates under the Oklahoma Department
of Vocational-Technical Training.
Kiamichi Area Vo-Tech, offering
other types of training on a semester basis, is located in Poteau,
just 18 miles to the south. Okmulgee Tech, noted as one of th
finest facilities of its type in the nation, is located just
130 miles to the west.
College and univeristy level education
is provided throught the area as well. Carl Albert State College,
Poetau, and the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith, in Fort
Smith, Arkansas are both 20 miles from Spiro. Ten other colleges
and universities are located within a 2220 mile radius, inclduing
the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University, University
of Tulsa, and the University of Arkansas.
