Municipal
Services - Spiro is governed by a 5-member
board of trustees elected for 4 year terms. The chairman, elected by
the other members, acts as Mayor. The trustees also serve as
the directors for the Spiro Municipal Utility Improvement Authority.
The City also employs a Town Administrator and Director of
Economic Development.
There is a 5 person, full-time
police department with 24-hour radio-dispatched patrol cars.
The Spiro Fire Department is a 15 person
volunteer unit with 24 hour pager dispatch system through the county 911 system.
The fire department has a 1500 gpm pumper, a 750 gpm pumper and a 1 ton quick
response unit. They have two grass fire units and a service truck for multi-purpose
uses. The department also has a rescue unit equiped with the " Jaws of Life". Three
Spiro fireman are first responders and assist the LeFlore County EMS on local calls.
The fire department is very proud to have earned a fire class of 5 for in town homes
and businesses and a rural rating class of 9.
Spiro has a full garbage pickup
service and hard-surfaced streets.
Spiro operates its own EPA-Approved
chemical sewage system treatment plant and collection system
capable of handing the projected population, and related industrial
growth, for the next 25 years, Sewer rates are charged on water
usage with special rates set up for manufacturing and industrial
services.
Spiro has a city-owned industrial
parks with all utility services for small industrial developments
already in place. There is a second privately-owned area adjacent
to the railroad line, designated for industrial development as
well as several other areas available for development of both
industrial and residential areas with a 3-mile radius of town.
